Omaha Ice Dams

BEWARE OF THE DANGER OF ICE DAMS ON YOUR OMAHA ROOF!

Those beautiful icicles dangling from the edge of your roof in Omaha, Blair or Council Bluffs may be nice to look at, but they are a sign that dangerous ice dams may be forming!

An ice dam is a barrier of ice that builds up into your gutters and roof edge. This is caused when snow on your roof begins to melt and then refreezes at the much colder edge of your roof. This allows water to seep under your roof, into your attic and down into the structure of your home, causing serious — and expensive — damage.

To deter ice dams from forming requires three steps. A properly vented roof will keep attic temperatures balanced and help prevent the cycle of “freeze and thaw” that allows ice dams to form. This is further helped by properly insulating your attic. Another important step is to properly maintain your house, including the roof and gutters. Make sure to repair any damaged shingles and keep debris out of the gutters to help keep water flowing, preventing clogs and backups.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ICE DAMS, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BREAK THEM UP YOURSELF!
